March 18

This was our first full day in Auckland. We bought tickets for the "Hop On, Hop Off" city tour. Most of the tour was viewed from a double decker bus, then we changed to a regular bus, but Ellen and I were the only ones on it. The bus driver gave us his own personal commentary, in addition to the scripted tape. The highlight of this tour was definitely the Auckland Museum. The Maori exhibits were fascinating as well as intriguing. Other stops were the Parnell district where we had lunch, and of course city sights.

For the evening we bought tickets to see a show, "Smoke and Mirrors." This was part of the Auckland Arts Festival. I cannot describe the show...a man is disgruntled with his life. He asks, "Have you ever wanted to join the circus?" With a range of emotions, he sings songs about his past, present, and future. He is joined by a wonderfully talented band, acrobats, a bearded lady, tap dancer, and an illusionist. I wonder what the acceptance would be in the States.
